The Republic of Bulgaria is a country in Southeastern Europe, It borders the Black Sea to the east, Greece and Turkey to the south, Serbia and the Republic of Macedonia to the west, and Romania to the north, mostly along the Danube. Bulgaria is an active member of NATO and is joining the European Union on January 1, 2007.

History and culture

The Bulgarians are an ancient people and Bulgaria has a culture and tradition dating back for 1300 years. It is founded 681A.D. and christinazed 851 A.D. The greatest territorial extension was reached under Simeon I, covering much of the Balkans and modern-day Romania . That time is called also the Golden Age. By the end of the 14th century the country was conquered by the Ottoman Empire . The 5-century period of Ottoman rule was characterized by great violence and terror. Gained autonomy in 1878.

Political System

Bulgaria is a Parliamentary Republic and the basic power in the country is the legislative one.
